Part 2: Encounters with the Piano

Join PS21 as we head into spring and a new season of residencies, showings, and performances that have become the defining features of our new venue.

“Contemporary Dancemakers/Encounters with the Piano,” is a double-bill celebration of innovative artists in contemporary dance and new music who are helping to redefine their respective mediums.

At 4 pm, award-winning dancer-choreographers Hilary Clark and Mina Nishimura will present new works, all with unique approaches to artistry, composition, and movement.  After the intermission musical maverick Adam Tendler will bring his individualistic perspective to the piano with the early work of Philip Glass and other contemporary composers.

Conversation with artists follows with light food and wine in the PS21 apple orchards.
On April 26 Hilary Clark will lead a Movement Without Borders Open-Level Class.

Hilary Clark, Mina Nishimura

Part I of this double-bill program presents premieres by two of today’s supremely gifted dance theater-makers, Mina Nishimura and Hilary Clark. Both Nishimura and Clark were part of PS21’s Movement Without Borders programming this past summer.

Tokyo-born Mina Nishimura was the recipient of Best Performance in Dance Magazine 2018 and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant to Artists Award in 2019. Her piece, in collaboration with David Guzman, “I am a Watermelon, a Grasshopper, a Gallstone, Uranus or You” explores extreme and nuanced expressions of beings who have been repressed, undiscovered, or ruled out in our rigidly defined and structured world. The work will be performed by Nishimura and Guzman.

Hilary Clark’s “Another Room” (2020), performed by Anna Kroll, Farhad Mirza, Ella Richardson, and Russell Stuart Lilie, reflects on the passage of time and memory.

Clark is a teacher, choreographer, director of Citrine Pilates & Wellness and Bessie Award winning dancer, working and collaborating on over 25 new works that toured nationally and internationally. Her work has been shown at Roulette, Aunts, Danspace Project, The Kitchen, Dixon Place, Mt. Tremper Arts, Dance Theater Workshop, and Painted Bride in Philadelphia. Clark has taught at Governor’s Institute of the Arts, Chunky Move (Australia), Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, Pacific Northwest College of Art (Oregon), Seattle Festival for Dance Improvisation at Velocity Dance Center (Seattle, WA), Movement Research (NYC) and presently is a Teaching Fellow and MFA candidate at Bennington College.
